Srinivas Kasulla: “Feedstock analysis is critical to avoid complete shutdowns”

BPC Instruments held a discussion with Srinivas Kasulla, Director of Arka BRENStech Pvt Ltd, to explore the Indian biogas market, their collaborative partnership, and strategies to mitigate process failures in large-scale biogas production.

Can you tell us about Arka BRENStech and what services you offer?

Arka BRENStech is a leading biogas engineering firm with a strong international presence and partnerships. We specialise in offering a full range of services to support clients through the entire biogas project life cycle, covering every part of the value chain.

Our core offerings include customised biogas plant design and engineering, where our experienced team ensures optimum performance by factoring in feedstock, desired output, and local regulations. We also manage project development and implementation from feasibility studies to commissioning, ensuring smooth execution.

To keep plants running at their best, we provide comprehensive operations and maintenance services, maximising biogas production and facility lifespan. Our consultancy services offer strategic support, helping clients plan, troubleshoot, and regulate navigation. We also conduct plant audits to evaluate efficiency and recommend improvements. “…In fact, the presence of a high concentration of heavy metals, antibiotics, etc. can completely inhibit the microbial community indulged in biogas production. Therefore, early detection of inhibitors would definitely enable us to be proactive in avoiding a complete shutdown.”

How do the technologies from BPC Instruments compare to other equipment or analytical methods you’ve experienced in the industry?

From my experience in the Indian biogas and hydrogen industry, BPC Instruments’ technology stands out as best-in-class.

We’ve installed numerous BPC instruments across various projects and laboratories, and the precision and accuracy of the data they provide are unmatched. When it comes to getting reliable results, there’s simply no comparison. Their technology also gives clients a significant edge over traditional methods, making processes faster and more efficient.

Beyond the equipment, BPC offers world-class support, making it the complete solution for anyone in need of reliable and efficient technology in the biogas and hydrogen sector.

Speaking from your experience in the biogas sector, how valuable would you say feedstock analysis and process optimisation are for the future of biogas?

Feedstock analysis and process improvement are critical to the future of the biogas industry. Firstly talking of feedstock analysis, we understand variability in feedstock characteristics can cause fluctuations in gas yield and quality. Assessing the feedstock assay, though periodically, shall lead to better control of the input variables to the process, leading to consistent biogas generation. In fact, the presence of a high concentration of heavy metals, antibiotics, etc. can completely inhibit the microbial community indulged in biogas production. Therefore, early detection of inhibitors would definitely enable us to be proactive in avoiding a complete shutdown.

Secondly, process improvement is a phenomenon that is continuously evolving. A well-optimised process is more stable, thus lowering the likelihood of process failure and increasing overall reliability. An efficient process enables higher capacity utilisation over a longer time, a rarity in the current industry.

Furthermore, maintaining efficiency and cost associated with maintenance also gets optimised with process stability. Going forward, I see significant advancement in these two domains and that should enable making biogas an even more competitive energy source.

Lastly, what has been the best part of working with BPC Instruments?

Partnering with BPC Instruments has been a highly positive experience. As their official partner for the biohydrogen and biogas sector in India, we’ve benefited from their deep expertise and reliable support. Their team’s prompt and thorough responses to our technical queries enable us to deliver effective solutions to our clients.
